Exam and Maintenance in Los Gatos, CA

Dentures are perhaps the best investment that patients with multiple missing teeth can make. They replace every single missing tooth in the mouth, thereby restoring its aesthetics and functionality. Despite their excellent strength and durability, patients need to take good care of the dentures, which otherwise may lead to excessive wear, change in the fit, loosening of the prosthetic teeth, etc.

What Are Denture Exams?

A denture exam may sound a bit strange, but it is vital for every patient who uses dentures. It allows the dentist to check for potential issues that could affect the dentures and prove to be expensive while getting them resolved. The exam allows for detecting a change in the dentures’ fit. If the issue isn’t addressed in the early stages, it could lead to a change in jawbone shape, persistent discomfort while using the dentures, damage to the soft tissues, issues with the bite, speech impediment, etc.

Maintenance of Dentures

In addition to visiting the dentist for regular denture exams, patients need to heed to the maintenance of their prosthetic teeth every day. The dentures will have to be cleaned using a soft or medium bristled toothbrush regularly to remove the adhered microbes and food debris. Use a denture cleaning solution for this purpose. Do not bite them too hard or use the prosthetic teeth to tear open plastic bags, open bottle caps, etc. This can crack or loosen the teeth and alter their fit. Store the dentures overnight in a denture cleaning solution or water. This prevents them from drying out and developing cracks.
