The American Dental Association defines a veneer as a thin, custom-made shell made of porcelain or composite material that is attached to the front of a tooth that is crooked or has aesthetic imperfections. The purpose of a veneer is to restore the structure and appearance of the tooth. Unlike direct fillings, which are applied directly to the tooth, veneers are indirect prosthetics that are made in a dental laboratory and then bonded to the prepared tooth.
Dr. Esfandiari uses dental veneers to address a range of cosmetic issues such as misaligned or uneven teeth, gaps between teeth, discoloration or staining that cannot be resolved with teeth whitening, and chipped or worn teeth. She often recommends veneers as an alternative to traditional crowns or orthodontic treatment because they can offer a more conservative and natural-looking solution for enhancing the appearance of the teeth.
Based on their materials, Dr Esfandiari uses two types of Dental Veneers: porcelain and composite veneers.
In terms of Veneer material brands, Dr. Esfandiari highly prefers IPS e.max veneers as they are very high quality, beautiful and require minimal prep. This together with some other material brands are explained below:
Dr. Esfandiari generally does not recommend these veneers, which are also called snap-on veneers or temporary veneers. These veneers are made of BPA-free material and can be easily put on or taken off at will. They are often chosen by individuals who want a quick fix and do not want to undergo the tooth preparation process required for permanent veneers. However, she does have a few patients who opt for this option.
Lumineers are a brand of porcelain veneers made by the company DenMat. They are ultra-thin veneers that are often so thin that no dental enamel (tooth preparation) is needed for bonding. Known as “no-prep” veneers, Lumineers are made of laminate rather than zirconia, porcelain, or composite resins. While Lumineers were popular a few years ago, Dr. Esfandiari now recommends e.max over Lumineers.
These are one of the most sought-after types of dental veneers and are highly recommended by Dr. Esfandiari. Emax veneers are made of a type of porcelain called lithium disilicate, which is known for its exceptional translucency and opalescence. These properties give Emax veneers a natural-looking appearance and make them almost indistinguishable from real teeth. Because of these characteristics, Emax veneers are often the best option for situations where excellent aesthetics are required, especially for front teeth. Dr. Esfandiari frequently recommends Emax veneers for these purposes.
Zirconium veneers are made of a type of ceramic called zirconia oxide, which is white in color. These veneers come in various shades, making them suitable for veneering teeth of different colors and shades. In addition, zirconium veneers are strong and durable, and they do not cause any allergic reactions in the mouth. Dr. Esfandiari may recommend this type of veneer depending on the patient’s needs, as zirconium veneers are also a commonly used ceramic material for veneering teeth.
The procedure for fabricating different types of dental veneers is more or less the same in our San Jose office. The procedure is straightforward and Dr. Esfandiari usually completes them in 2-3 sittings.
Dental veneers offer various advantages over other cosmetic options like crowns and implants. When preparing a treatment plan, Dr. Esfandiari considers these to recommend a proper plan for her patients:
The service life of dental veneers depends on many factors, such as their type, oral hygiene maintenance, and the dentist’s skill and experience. However, with proper care, Dr. Esfandiari expect your veneers to last up to ten years.
Dental veneers placed by an experienced and skilled dentist such as Dr. Esfandiari won’t harm your teeth. This is because only a thin layer of the enamel is removed for their bonding, which does not make the teeth weak or prone to dental cavities.
Veneers are considered a cosmetic treatment and usually are not covered by insurances. It is a good idea to consult with your insurance provider before getting veneers by Dr. Esfandiari.
Considering the improvement in one’s smile and facial aesthetics and their need for minimal tooth preparation and durability, dental veneers are an excellent restorative option in our San Jose dental office.
Lumineers are ultra-thin veneers made of laminates that require minimal or no tooth preparation for their attachment.
yes. Veneers require shaving off a thin layer of dental enamel for their bonding. However, don’t worry; Dr. Esfandiari makes sure so this will not make your teeth sensitive or weak.
Like all other dental restorations and prostheses, veneers are also not permanent. However, they can last up to ten years, even longer, if they are looked after properly and you follow up care instructions provided by Dr. Esfandiari.
